No Opportunity Wasted....

When Opportunity knocks, it's not polite to shut the door. Or as I did yesterday, slam the door right in Opportunity's face.
Crude remarks, jealousy, impatience and a lack of emotional control got in the way - big time. It's hard to sometimes just "go with the flow" and sing "que sera, sera, whatever will be, will be, the future's not ours to see...". You just have to let fate take its course and truly believe that what is meant to be, will happen. However, by pushing things, by lashing out, by trying too hard - the odds turn against you and Opportunity decides to walk away. I think I'll just take the passenger seat for now. Put Opportunity on cruise control, sit back and enjoy the ride. No matter how long it takes, and no matter what destination I reach in the end - it's all about the journey - the experiences, the people, the observations and the lessons. And of course, a happy ending would always be welcomed.

It's good to be ALIVE!

Last night I was driving home from Newmarket. It was late and there werent' that many cars on the road. I was on a stretch of Highway 9 heading west to the 400. There are no street lights for quite a while. It was just me, Lady Sage (my car), some electric tunes and the light of the moon. I had to smile as I looked up at the stars. I was thinking to myself, what a gorgeous night! Then I said outloud to myself, "it's good to be alive" and laughed. Driving up the 400 earlier that afternoon, the sun was out and the trees were magnificent in their autumn attire. I had to force myself to keep my eye on the road, as they kept drifting off, taking in the tranquility of the fields, trees and horses that I was driving past. I treasure little moments like this. They don't happen too often, or they do, but we don't have the time to really even notice them. Take the time. Treasure each moment. Live life to the fullest.

Breakfast Start Shake

Good morning to all!
Here's a great breakfast shake recipe that is a blend of nutritional energy to start your day! Naturally, you can add different fruits or healthy items to make it "your own". Breakfast is an important part of the day - try not to skip it! Since, I'm not usually that hungry early in the day, I just make a shake and drink it on the way to work or once I get there. It's filling and yummy!

Here's the lo-down:
6 fresh strawberries
1 handful blueberries, raspberries or blackberries
1 teaspoon wheatgrass powder
1 teaspoon ground flax seed
1 cup almond milk (vanilla flavour)
1 teaspoon almond butter
3-4 ice cubes
1 scoop iso-whey protein (optional)

Put all ingredients in a blender. First on crush ice setting and then on blend. Add liquid (water, almond milk or juice of your choice) if too thick for your liking. There are many substitutions that can be made. You can replace the almond milk, with yogurt (I suggest Activia as it contains probiotics) but add so more liquid so that the shake is not too thick. If using plain yogurt, you may want to use honey or organic maple syrup for sweetening. You can also add a banana (excellent source of potassium) instead of all the berries (it tends to give me a tummy ache, so I usually don't have it often).

My start shake has the following nutritional benefits:

Strawberries' unique phenol content makes them a heart-protective fruit, an anti-cancer fruit, and an anti-inflammatory fruit, all rolled into one. They also serve as potent antioxidants that have repeatedly been shown to help protect cell structures in the body and to prevent oxygen damage in all of the body's organ systems.

Blueberries improve the integrity of support structures in the veins and entire vascular system. Packed with antioxidant phytonutrients called anthocyanidins, blueberries neutralize free radical damage to the collagen matrix of cells and tissues that can lead to cataracts, glaucoma, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, heart disease and cancer. Anthocyanins, the blue-red pigments found in blueberries.

Raspberries' anthocyanins give these delectable berries unique antioxidant properties, as well as some antimicrobial ones, including the ability to prevent overgrowth of certain bacteria and fungi in the body (for example, the yeast Candida albicans, which is a frequent culprit in vaginal infections and can be a contributing cause in irritable bowel syndrome).

Unlike animal milk, almond milk contains no cholesterol or lactose and is gluten-free. It is low in sodium and enriched with Calcium and Vitamins D and E, contains a high level of unique phytonutrients, and is a good source of Vitamin A. Almonds can significantly lower heart disease risk.

Wheat grass contains chlorophyll, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes. It promotes a healthy immune system.

Alpha linolenic acid, the omega-3 fat found in flaxseed promotes bone health. Omega-3 fats are used to produce substances that reduce the formation of blood clots, which can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with atherosclerosis or diabetic heart disease.

Iso-Whey protein is a great addition for athletes and those who lead an active lifestyle. It is low in fat, contains amino acids and proteins that help to rebuild muscles.

So tomorrow morning, get a healthy start to your day and try this awesome shake recipe!!!

Footnote: although my recipe is slightly modified, thanks to a good friend who introduced me to this breakfast/pre/post exercise option!

Almost Full Circle

It's Thanksgiving. A year ago, my heart and mind were in a completely different place. It's amazing at how time goes by so quickly and how much can change within that timeframe.
My life is definately not the same. It is so much better and more promising than it was the same time last year. I am back home after having lived abroad. I live in my own place, I do more of what I want to do. After having lived away from home due to school and then work, then moving in with someone, then moving back home, I finally feel settled. This is where I am meant to be right now. I love my job, I love being close to my family and friends. And a friendship that I thought I had lost, is slowing rekindling. I am stronger in mind and body then I was before. I have more of an idea of what I want and how I intend to get it. I am making peace with myself and taking better care of me.
Albeit, not everything has improved since last year. My parents are getting older and I can see it more. My dad is sick without much hope for improvement. But I do have a stronger support network around me then I ever did. I am more grounded, more mature and more spiritual.
Last year, I had tears dripping down my face in sadness, bewilderment and self torment. This year, I take a deep breath and smile. I look forward with hope and determination, as I run through the park and appreciate the beauty of an autumn day.

It's all about Number Two

It's not just another number, but holds a lot of meaning for me. This number has held a great significance for me in the past. And recently, this number has come up again in a sign of pride and victory. As I continue by journey of self discovery, I am more aware that I need to think of myself more. If I don't take care of me, then I am no good to anyone else. I can't continue shoving myself aside and being number 2 (or further down the list). I need to be my own Number One. I believe I have also been given a second chance - an opportunity - I can either let it pass me by or go after it whole heartedly. I choose the second option. This segways nicely into the actual meaning of the number. The symbolic meaning of number Two is kindness, balance, tact, equalization, and duality. The number Two reflects a quiet power of judgment, and the need for planning. Two beckons us to choose. The spiritual meaning of number Two also deals with exchanges made with others, partnerships (both in harmony and rivalry), and communication. Two's urge us of our indecision, calls us to unite with like-minds, and like-ideals, as well as exert our natural flow of judgment to do what is best for our souls.
