1% lower GST - Big Whoop!

So the government has confirmed that they will be lowering the GST by 1% in 2008.
Did they ever think that this change costs small business owners time and money to convert all their cash registers to the new tax percentage? Pre-printed accounting books need to be re-printed, which means, more paper, which means more trees! Is there really much thought that goes into this at all?
I would rather see the GST stay at 6% and have the government promise that 1% of all the GST collected would go to the saving the environment, reducing greenhouse gases and ultimately, being able to meet the standards of the proposed Kyoto Agreement, which our government has previously said, we can't possibly meet. I believe that more of the voting population than one would think, would be for this proposal rather than against it. It just makes sense. In a democratic society that we supposedly live in, I wish our government would seek the opinion of its constituents more often, then assuming what it is that we want and need. Ask the people. We do count and so does our environment.
Could you imagine a beautiful warm summer's day, when the ailing and elderly no longer needed to stay indoors due to the smog outside? Now that is something! And that's just the beginning. We are talking a change to the quality of life for millions of people. Will Saving $1 on a $100 spent, really make much of a difference in your pocket at the end of the day?
